QatarEnergy and its venture partners utilize a fleet of 69 vessels to transport LNG to our customers around the globe.

When established, the fleet was the largest fully integrated merchant ship building program undertaken in over 60 years. Construction was across three Korean shipyards: Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) at Ulsan, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), both located on Geoje Island.

The fleet consists of Q-Flex, Q-Max and conventional vessels serving buyers of LNG in the Far-East, Indian sub-continent, Europe and the Mediterranean. Vessel capacities range from 135,000 and 152,000 cubic meters for conventional vessels, and up to 266,000 cubic meters on the Q-Max.

The design and construction of the Q-Flex and Q-Max carriers were technological landmark events for the LNG shipping industry. Significantly larger than previous LNG vessels, their development introduced new and innovative concepts to the sector.

Through economies of scale, the significantly larger Q-Max and Q-Flex vessels provide lower transportation costs than other vessels. Traditionally, LNG vessels have grown incrementally, but groundbreaking studies on in-tank sloshing loads enabled new vessel designs to increase tank capacity by up to 50%. This technological innovation helped increase typical maximum vessel cargo capacity from 150,000 cubic meters to 266,000 cubic meters on the Q-Max.

One full cargo of a Q-Max can provide enough energy to heat 26 million UK homes — roughly 41% of the country’s total population — for an entire day.

Q-FLEX and Q-MAX Vessels

A fleet of 31 Q-Flex and 14 Q-Max vessels on long-term charter can transport 210,000 cubic meters and 266,000 cubic meters of LNG respectively. These vessels supply the Far East, Europe and other markets.

Conventional Vessels

A fleet of 24 purpose-built conventional vessels on long-term charter serves the buyers of LNG in the Far-East, Indian sub-continent, Europe and the Mediterranean. Each vessel has a capacity of between 135,000 and 152,000 cubic meters.
