Onshore Oil
Dukhan is one of the largest onshore oil and gas field, 80 km to the West of Doha. The field produces crude oil, associated gas, condensate and non-associated gas.
The first shipment of oil was transported from Dukhan on 31st December 1949 through Mesaieed port terminal.
North Gas Field
With total recoverable gas of more than 900 trillion standard cubic feet, the North Gas Field was discovered in 1971 and is considered the largest single non-associated gas reservoir in the world. It covers an area of 6,000 square kilometers, equivalent to about half the land area of the State of Qatar.
Commercial exploration of North Field gas resources started in 1991 with initial gas production from Phase I (Alpha Project). The average production from this project is more than 700 mmscf per day of gas and 18,000 barrels per day of stabilized condensate. Gas is mainly used for supply to the local market and condensate for refining or export.
Offshore Oil
High-quality crude oil and associated gas are produced from the Offshore Field's south sector, Idd El-Sharqi (North and South Domes), Maydan Mahzam and Bul Hanine fields, which began production in 1962, 1965 and 1972 respectively. In addition, Al-Murjan Field produces from the north sector via Al-Rayyan platform.
QatarEnergy operates three offshore production stations on these fields, PS-1, PS-2 and PS-3. The three platforms produce crude oil, associated gas, and condensate. Oil with condensate is piped to Halul Island for storage and export. Gas is primarily used to lift the oil from reservoirs, utilized as fuel gas in production stations and Halul, as well as feed to Mesaieed NGL facilities.
The average oil production from PS-1, PS-2 and PS-3 is more than 100,000 barrels per day, with gas delivery to the downstream of more than 50 mmscf per day.
Exploration, appraisal and development operations
During the last 25 years, QatarEnergy has signed Exploration and Production Sharing Agreements (EPSA) and Development and Production Sharing Agreements (DPSA) with a number of major international oil and gas companies, including Elf Aquitaine/Total, Anadarko Qatar, Maersk Oil Qatar, Occidental Petroleum Qatar, Qatar Petroleum Development, Talisman Energy Qatar, GDF Suez, China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), Qatar Shell, Exxon Mobil and Dolphin Energy.
These agreements have boosted Qatar's oil and gas reserves through new discoveries and the development of existing fields. Some of the fields which were discovered and/or developed through these agreements are Idd El Shargi Dome (North and South), Al Shaheen Field and Al Khaleej Field, as well as, Al Karara and A Structures.
Halul Island
Halul Island is a storage and export center for Qatar's marine crude oil. The island, which has an area of 1.5 km2, lies approximately 96 km to the northeast of Doha. It has 10 crude oil storage tanks with a total capacity of over 4 million barrels. The island also has pumping facilities, desalination plants, a heliport and a harbor. It is also fully equipped with community facilities for almost 1,000 QatarEnergy staff and contractors.
